Manteo High School and First Flight High School AVID students recently completed a three-day college field trip in which the students visited six different colleges and universities in North Carolina. Part of the trip was funded through a grant provided by the Dare Education Foundation. It was also made possible by Alex Chandler with the Dare County Schools Bus Garage and Dare County Schools.
On the first day of the trip, students began with a tour of Wake Technical Community College followed by a campus tour of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The tour of Chapel Hill was lead by Josh Pack, Samantha Suprenant, and Vanessa Vasquez, all of whom are DCS graduates that currently attend UNC-Chapel Hill. Afterward, students took a tour of North Carolina Central University lead by Manteo High School graduates Shumure Flowers and Maria Mendoza. The first day ended with a Durham Bull's baseball game in downtown Durham.
Students began the second day of the trip with a tour of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro's campus. The tour was lead by Idasia Brickhouse, Jack Konstanzer, Katie Hala, and Cierra Hailey, all of whom are DCS graduates that currently attend UNC-Greensboro. Following the tour of the larger public university, students then explored the campus of the smaller private school nearby, Greensboro College. The afternoon concluded with a visit to the local trampoline park and the mall.
On the final day of the trip, students explored the campus of Appalachian State University, lead by former Manteo High School AVID students, Vanessa Salazar and Angela Anacleto.
These college trips provide AVID students a first-hand experience with different types of college campuses and experiences to help them make an informed decision during the college admissions process their senior year.
