New beach access opens in Buxton

Cape Hatteras National Seashore has opened a new beach access and parking area in Buxton. The Buxton Beach Access, located at the end of Old Lighthouse Road, provides improved public access to oceanside recreational activities.

The access features a 50-car parking area and portable restrooms. A non-slip wheelchair beach access mat will be available. Plans for a permanent restroom facility with showers and other site upgrades are under development.

Visitors planning a trip to the new access should be aware that reaching the site requires travel through a residential area. Pay close attention to pedestrians on Old Lighthouse Road and the speed limit signs.

The site previously served as a U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard base.
