The College of the Albemarle plans to add general education classes for the summer schedule 2019 at the Dare County Campus in Manteo.

The courses will help to satisfy the requirements of students needing general education classes in a face-to-face setting, while only having to travel to campus two days during the week.

The schedule has been developed based on projected needs at the campus and allows for fulfillment of requirements across multiple general education categories. Classes to be offered include English 112: Writing/Research in the Disciplines, History 132: American History II, Art 111: Art Appreciation and Music 110: Music Appreciation.

Offering the summer cohort of general education classes is part of a broader initiative underway to grow enrollment at the Dare campus. According to Dr. Dean Roughton, Dean of the Division of Arts and Sciences, “President Wynegar brought together key stakeholders to examine how we might increase course offerings at Dare while still using resources efficiently.” Tim Sweeney, Dean of the Dare County Campus, and several members of the Division of Student Success and Enrollment Management were involved in the discussion.

Roughton explained, “This work group determined that creating a two-year projected schedule to improve student advising, as well as rotating courses to add variety, were important steps for growth in Dare County. The group also felt the addition of face-to-face classes was a potential opportunity to better serve students in Dare County who may be more suited to that delivery mode than the online format that has typically dominated the summer schedule. Now, we just need students to sign up for the classes to ensure we can continue to offer them each summer.”
