Dare County now under Hurricane and Storm Surge Warning

Bulletin #4 

With the most recent update from the National Hurricane Center, a Hurricane Warning and Storm Surge Warning are now in effect for Dare County indicating that tropical storm conditions and life-threatening storm surge are expected within 36 hours.  

It is important for those who have not evacuated to make preparations to leave the area as soon as possible to avoid travel after the onset of strong winds, ocean overwash, rainfall flooding and possible tornadoes that will accompany the storm.    

A shelter for Dare County residents is open at Knightdale High School located at 100 Bryan Chalk Lane, Knightdale, NC 27545. This is a pet friendly shelter that requires vaccination records for each pet. While in the shelter, owners are responsible for the feeding, care, clean-up, and behavior of their pets.

There are currently no restrictions for entering or leaving the county. Beginning at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 12 only essential personnel with a Priority One pass issued by Dare County Emergency Management will be allowed entry.   

Dare County Administrative Offices will remain closed until further notice. The Dare County Emergency Operations Center is activated and can be reached at 252.475.5655.

Trash collection for the unincorporated areas of Dare County is cancelled for the remainder of the week and regular collection will resume when conditions allow. All Dare County Public Works facilities are closed until further notice.

Town of Duck

Trash collection for the Town of Duck on Friday, September 14 is cancelled.  Please ensure that your cans and all loose items are secured.

The Town of Duck administrative office will remain closed until further notice.

Town of Kitty Hawk

The Town of Kitty Hawk continues to prepare for Hurricane Florence and encourages all visitors and residents to heed the mandatory evacuation.  Please be reminded that Emergency Personnel will not be able to respond when conditions worsen.

There will be no further trash collections until weather permits.  Please roll in your trash cans and make sure they are secured along with other loose items.

Town offices will be closed beginning Wednesday, September 12 through Friday, September 14.

The Recycle Center is now closed and will remain closed for the remainder of the week. Windgrass Circle Park and Sandy Run Park will be closing this afternoon until further notice.

The Kitty Hawk Bath House is also closed.   

The Town encourages you to take every measure to ensure the safety of your property and loved ones.

Town of Southern Shores

Recycling pickup for Wednesday, September 12 is currently anticipated, however please be ready for a change due to driver availability. The next trash pickup will be Monday September 17.

Town of Nags Head

Most, if not all, of South Old Oregon Inlet Road, as well as sections of South Virginia Dare Trail, including the causeway to Manteo, could be impassable due to flooding. Do not go through the barricades. They are in place for a reason.

Town of Manteo

Commercial AND residential solid waste pickup will be done on Wednesday, September 12.

Town of Manteo administrative offices will remain closed through Friday, September 14.

National Park Service

All National Park Service facilities at Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, and Wright Brothers National Memorial remain closed.

Dare County Schools

All Dare County Schools will be closed through the remainder of the week.  

The next scheduled update from Dare County Emergency Management will be issued on Wednesday morning, September 12.
