Dare Board denies two requests
At its May 20 meeting, the Dare County Board of Commissioners responded to prolonged public comment by denying two requests from businesses operating on Hatteras Island. Responding to Wind Over Waves subdivision residents and business owners who stated that the very popular kiteboarding industry offshore in the Pamlico Sound would be severely impacted by the proposed oyster farm lease, the board stated that it would stand by its resolution adopted on May 7 opposing the lease application and suggesting that it be relocated elsewhere.
And after a lengthy presentation by spokesmen for Commercial Ready Mix Products, Inc. (CRMP) about the need to begin work at 3 a.m. at its Waves plant to deliver higher quality concrete to the work sites of the three bridges under construction, the board again cited location as a significant issue, supporting Waves residents and business owners who stated that the earlier start time would negatively impact families, businesses and tourists.
In denying CMRP's request for the change in its conditional use permit, the board suggested looking into alternative locations, including the worksite at the Bonner Bridge replacement project.
