Manteo Town Clerk Becky Breiholz announced that the Manteo Board of Commissioners approved a resolution on Jan. 16 requesting that the new bridge at Oregon Inlet be named after former State Senator Marc Basnight.
The resolution came in the wake of the Dare County Board of Commissioners' Jan. 7 decision to consider submitting a formal request to the N.C. Board of Transportation that the new bridge replacing the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge over Oregon Inlet be named in honor of Basnight. The new bridge is slated to be open in the next month or so.
The Dare board asked Public Information Officer Dorothy Hester to post a submission form on the Dare County website for citizens to use in suggesting names and agreed to plan on reaching a final decision at the board's Feb. 4 meeting. To access the form, Dare residents should go to www.darenc.com. Proposals must be submitted by Jan. 31 at 5 p.m.
The Manteo board's resolution noted that Basnight, a native of Manteo and Manteo High School graduate, had advocated for the replacement of the Bonner Bridge as a "vital life line to Hatteras Island" and made "extraordinary contributions to the growth and strength of Dare County in countless recorded and unrecorded ways," along with contributing "to the economic and cultural history of the county."
